How the cold weather affects your energy use

Cold weather plays a major role in increasing your natural gas usage, which can have a big impact on your bill. Understand how:

During the winter, your natural gas heating system has to run longer to maintain the indoor temperature. Remember, every degree lower on your thermostat can help you save – it’s like finding change in your couch cushions!

When it’s cold outside, colder water enters your water heater, which requires more energy to heat. Your water heater is just building up the suspense for that perfect shower.

Spending more time at home can lead to higher energy use for heating, lighting and appliances. We get it, who doesn’t love a good movie marathon when it’s cold?

Older or less efficient natural gas heating systems, as well as poor insulation or drafts around windows and doors, can lead to higher energy usage.

During the winter, you might find yourself cooking and baking more often, which can increase your natural gas usage. Just be mindful of the oven door – every peek lets out precious heat!

Using a gas fireplace to keep warm can also contribute to higher gas usage during the colder months. A natural gas fireplace is perfect for those cozy winter nights – just don’t forget to turn it off before you drift off!

Tips to reduce energy use

A few simple tweaks can make a big difference in your usage

Making small changes to your thermostat can help you save a lot! Keeping the temperature at 65° during the day can reduce heating use by up to 15%.

Consider installing a programmable or Wi-Fi thermostat. You can lower temperatures when you and your family are not at home. Check out our thermostat selection on the Smart Solutions page.

Look for and seal any leaks in your ductwork. A simple roll of duct tape from your local hardware store will work, but for a professional touch, duct sealing is fully covered in our Home Energy Solutions service.

Clean your filters or replace them once a month to increase performance. It’s like taking a shower after exercising for hours!

Roll up a small rug or towel and place it across the bottom of your door or windows to prevent cold air from sneaking in.

Close heat registers in rooms you’re not using, but make sure the temperature stays above freezing to protect your pipes. It's chilly outside, make sure to keep the coziness right where you need it!

If you use gas heat, switching to a high-efficiency gas furnace can be a great way to reduce your use.

Set your water heater to 120°F. Many are preset at 140°F, which uses more energy than necessary. It can be hot, but it doesn’t need to be burning-hot, right?
