Southern Connecticut Gas fully embraces its environmental stewardship. We fully recognize that climate change is an urgent problem that affects everyone. Here are some steps we have taken:
EPA STAR Program
SCG recently joined the Environmental Protection Agency’s Natural Gas STAR Program. The program is a partnership between EPA and the natural gas and oil industry that encourages the use of cost-effective technologies and practices designed to improve operational efficiencies and reduce methane emissions. Methane is a primary component of natural gas and is also a greenhouse gas.
Path to Climate Sustainability
This past spring, SCG, as an Energy East member company, signed on with an international group of companies dedicated to endorsing the “Path to Climate Sustainability.” The participants’ commitment is designed to create sustainable energy systems for fueling economic growth while also protecting the environment.
We have already undertaken initiatives that work toward reducing greenhouse gases. For example:
- Our operations department is utilizing improved techniques that reduce the level of methane venting during pipeline repair processes.
- Our marketing department is working with commercial/industrial customers to develop combined heating and cooling projects that have significantly reduced carbon dioxide levels. Both methane and carbon dioxide have been identified as greenhouse gases.
- We have expanded company-wide recycling programs to reduce waste at our facilities. We all need to work harder to use energy more efficiently, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase our efforts to use less and recycle more.
